The, The Branch Of Medicine Caring For Older Aged Patients

Geriatrics is the branch of medicine caring for older aged patients typically over the age of sixty-five. Because geriatric patients have differing needs, professionals differentiate between Frail Elderly adults and Well Elderly adults. The term Frail elderly adult describes people over the age of 65 who require frequent medical intervention. Physical therapists work with these patients to regain mobility, skills, or to modify their environment to maximize their function. In contrast, well elderly adults are people over the age of 65 who are not experiencing physical limitations or whose age related changes are not significant enough to affect function. Physical therapist may work with these patients to prevent debilitating conditions or to maintain good physical function. Combined, elderly adults made up 12.8% of the U.S population. Since individual’s life spans are expected to increase, the percent of the elderly adult population is expected to increase. Approximately Forty-seven percent of adults over the age of 70, who are not institutionalized, have trouble performing one or more activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, or physical activities.
